Item Details
Description
Native American, Pacific Northwest, Neah Bay, WA, ca. 1860-1930; Northern California, Yurok, ca. 1850s-1930s. The Makah artisans of Neah Bay created this trinket basket form in the 1860s that in time became commercially available and raffia replaced the more labor-intensive fully twined and twisted cedar bark. This example is a transitional style particular to the 1870s-1880s, featuring a rim with lip seat, a base with a small area of plaiting; however, most of the basket exhibits the kind of twining that requires a painstaking, meticulous technique. The Yoruk basket exhibits the Northern Californian basket weaver single sided overlay technique in which the design only shows on the outside of the basket. The Yurok along with the Hupa and Karuk weavers employed several different basketry techniques to ensure that their baskets were both functional and beautiful including plain twining, three strand twining, and lattice twining. A hallmark of Northwestern California basketry is the near perfectly trimmed rims and the precision of the designs. 2-1/4"T x 4-1/4"D (Makah) 4"H x 8"L x 5"W (Yurok)
