Simple and elegant tea caddy with excellent provenance
The tea caddy was made in 1788 by Richard Crossley, one of the most important manufacturers of silverware in the late 18th and early 19th century. It is of simple, rectangular shape with beveled edges and a molded lid. A special feature is the engraved coat of arms with full ermine of the former owner Richard Chetwynd, 5th Viscount Chetwynd of Bear Haven (1757-1821), a member of the Irish peerage.
The tea caddy is hallmarked on the base with the maker's mark ‘RC’ for Richard Crossley, London town mark, sterling standard mark, date letter ‘A’ (1796) and duty mark (George III). The edge of the lid bears the maker's mark, sterling standard mark and date letter.
The caddy is in very good condition with light signs of age and wear. The height measures 8.5 cm, the weight is about 314 g. (tfa)
