The eggshell porcelains by the Rozenburg porcelain manufactory, which was only active from 1883 to 1917, are highly sought-after collector’s items

The present Rozenburg porcelain picture from the early 20th century features an atmospheric canal view of Amsterdam, which was painter after a well-known motif by the painter Jacob Maris (1837-1899). The composition in the impressionist style was rendered in muted earth tones. Some sailing masts, roof tops and the dome of the Kopelkerk in the background stand out from the silhouette. The cloudy sky indicates an upcoming storm.

The porcelain picture is in very good condition. The color surface shows fine craquelure consistent with age. The back of the plate has a chip to one edge, and the frame shows some losses. The overall dimensions, including the frame, are 46 x 61 cm. The tile measures circa 29 x 44 cm.

Rozenburg porcelain (1883-1917)

The Rozenburg porcelain factory was established in 1883 by W.W. von Gudenberg (1855-1930) with the name ‘N. V. Haagsche Plateelfabrik Rozenburg’. It specialized in Art Nouveau tableware and vases. In 1884, the Designer Th. C. A. Colenbrander (1841-1930) became the artistic director of the manufactory. He is considered the greatest innovator of Dutch ceramics. In 1894, the position was taken over by J. J. Kok, who introduced the production of eggshell porcelain, which enjoyed great popularity around 1900 and is still famous to this date.
