Rare allegorical representation of the eternally youthful lover of the moon goddess Selene
The mythical Endymion received eternal beauty and youth by his lover Selene and the god Zeus to save him from death. The present porcelain figurine shows Endymion in the form of a hunter with bow and arrow and a hunting dog. The figure gains a striking vitality by its fluttering robe, the moving posture and the intense colors. The hunting dog shows a charming form with fine painted fur.
The figurine bears the blue mark of the Volkstedt Porcelain Manufactory Richard Eckert & Co. to the underside. It is in good overall condition, showing small losses affecting the foliage and major areas of restoration under UV light. The overall height with base is 46 cm.
Volkstedt Porcelain Manufactory
The Volkstedt Porcelain Manufactory was established in 1760 by Georg Heinrich Macheleid. Since 1860, the company operated under different names. In 2006/2007, the factory was taken over by Seltmann Weiden. The ornate figures of the Volkstedter porcelain manufactory are hand-made and meet the highest quality standards. Their vitality, elegance and the high quality of the painting enjoy high reputation among collectors.
