This sterling silver tea caddy was made in London by Duncan Urquhart & Naphtali Hart in 1797. The front shows a foliage garland bordered cartouche with an ornate monogram. The back shows a symmetrical, yet empty cartouche. The silver box is decorated with encircling bands of flowers and foliage along the upper and lower edge. The lid is attached to the box by elegantly hidden hinges. Further decorative bands with stitch like patterns adorn the stepped, domed lid crowned with a foliage relief decorated knob finial. The caddy has a small lock on the front side above the monogram.
The tea caddy is in good condition with traces of age and use as well as small insignificant dents. A key is not enclosed. On the underside of the caddy, the manufacturer’s mark as well as the town, duty, date and assayer’s mark can be found. The inside of the lid has the mark of the prowling lion, confirming the sterling silver standard. The caddy has a height of 16.2 cm and weighs approx. 331 grams. (pbu)
