The present Art Nouveau ceramic figure of a dancer was manufactured in the manufactory of Peter Goldscheider in Stoob according to a design by Helmut Lindner dating from 1913-14. The impressive dance posture and the combination of bright glazed and gilt ceramic are especially striking in this figure. Very well done are also the finely sculptured folds of the dress, which fits tightly the body of the dancer and which is raised by her with elegance.

The figure is marked with the brown-black manufactory stamp ‘Goldscheider G Vienna’, another stamp with a potter and the word ‘SCVLPTVRE’ to the underside. It is in good restored condition. The foot and the base were broken off and have been professionally restored. The figure is 38 cm in height without the base. The base measures 4 cm in height and has a diameter of 19.5 cm.

Friedrich Goldscheider (1845-1897)

Friedrich Goldscheider is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the history of European ceramics. He founded his manufactory in Vienna under the name ‘Manufaktur Friedrich Goldscheider’ in 1885. His pieces matched the spirit of the times during the time around 1900 – and particularly in the 1920s. His pieces were well known internationally; they were made of faience, terracotta, bronze and alabaster and represented historicist, art nouveau, art deco and orientalist styles. The Goldscheider family emigrated to England and to the US in 1938 and started new ceramic manufactories there. Friedrich’s son, Walter Goldscheider, only returned to Vienna in 1950. He had to shut down the manufactory for economic reasons. He sold the license to the Goldscheider name to a German company called ‘Carstens’. In 1987, Friedrich’s grandchild restarted the family business under the name ‘Stoob’.
