Description
Multi-coloured costume with red and gold overskirt Gouache over pencil, extensively heightened with gold 1914, bears signature centre right 33.5 x 27cm (13 1/4 x 10 5/8 in) Exhibited: John Carr Doughty Collection Exhibition, Belgrade Theatre, 1967; Diaghilev Exhibition, Musées de Strasbourg, cat. no. 188, 1969; Bakst Exhibition, Fine Arts Society, London, cat. no. 48, 1974. This design was commissioned by Diaghilev in Berlin, in 1914, to promote the Ballet Russe in the Illustrated London News for the forthcoming London season. Because Bakst's original drawings could not be sent through the mail due to the war, so this and 3 other designs offered in this sale were produced and inscribed with his 'signature' with his and Diaghilev's approval..
