Description
Both after Robert Smirke Engravings, both with aquatint by Francis Jukes, the latter with hand-colouring 1786 and 1784, respectively, by the engraver Each c.445 x 545mm. (17 1/2 x 21 1/2 in) Unframed The Halsewell was an early East Indiaman, built in 1778. On her 4th voyage, in January 1786, destined for India and Japan, she ran into a gale in the English Channel and ran onto rocks at Seacombe, Isle of Purbeck, Dorset, with the loss of all but 74 of the 240 passengers and crew. The Grosvenor was sailing home from Trinidad when she struck rocks off the Pondoland coast of Eastern Cape Province in Southern Africa, in June 1782. Although all but the drunken cook's mate made it to shore, the attempted long walk to Cape Town finished off nearly all the survivors.
