Description
Exceptional Large-Sized Stoneware Presentation Flowerpot with Incised Foliate Decoration, Inscribed "Lydia Taylor Great Valley CC (Chester County) / 8 Mo. 26 1826," attributed to the James Pottery, Westtown, Chester County, PA, 1826, finely-potted, pedestal-based flowerpot with coggled decoration and crimped rim. Surface covered in yellow slip and decorated with heavy copper along with a lead-based overglaze. Sgraffito-decorated with stylized looping line and plant designs below a finely-incised inscription for the flowerpot's owner, Lydia Taylor. Great Valley, as noted on the flowerpot, is a west-to-east valley located in central Chester County, which extends from the Schuylkill River in Montgomery County to Chester County and part of Lancaster County. This flowerpot includes its original separate saucer with footed base and crimped rim, decorated with yellow slip, copper, and overlying lead glaze. Significant restoration to surface and rim. Additional wear to rim. Firing crack in underside of pot. Saucer unrestored, the rim with losses, chips, and wear, the saucer itself with a crack in base, chipping to one foot, and a small glaze flake near base. H (including base) 10 1/2".
