Very Rare Large-Sized Map of the Clay District of Middlesex County, New Jersey, Surveyed and Drawn by J.K. Barton, C.E., 1877, entitled GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF NEW JERSEY MAP OF THE CLAY DISTRICT OF MIDDLESEX CO. SHOWING LOCATIONS OF BEDS OF STONEWARE CLAY, KAOLIN AND FIRE CLAY, the color-coded map illustrates the locations of the following materials: Fire Sand, Red Brick Clay, Stoneware Clay, South Amboy Fire Clay, Feldspar and Kaolin, Woodbridge Fire Clay, and Raritan Clay. Landmarks of note include: South Amboy, Perth Amboy, Chas. Morgan's Estate- Stoneware Clay Banks, Chas. Fish Est. Pottery, Everett & Perrine Clay Pits, Furman & Morgan Clay Pits, Noah Furman Stoneware Clay, Noah Furman Stoneware Clay Pits, Theodore Smith Stoneware Clay Pits, E.R. Rose & Son Stoneware Clay Pits, Otto Ernst Stoneware Clay Banks, A. Hall & Son Fire Brick & Pottery, C.W. Boynton & Co Drain Pipe, Woodbridge Clay Co., and Salamander Wks. Fire Brick & Drain Pipe, Salamander Wks. Dock, Salamander Wks. Fire Sand, Valentine Bros. Fire Brick Drain Pipe Land Tile, and Willett & Yates Pottery. A wonderful map, significant to the history of New Jersey ceramics, with locations of various New Jersey potteries and where they acquired their clay. Note the mention of the Rockingham pottery, Salamander Works on the upper portion of the map. Included in an antique stained wooden frame. Losses to top edge and upper right corner. Staining. Some drips of white paint. A few tears. Frame missing hanging wire. Framed Dimensions: 41" x 31 1/2".
