"The plates are etched by G. Lewis, from drawings made by himself upon the spot, when he accompanied the Rev. T[homas] F[rognall] Dibdin upon his late "Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany;" whose work, as well as others that have been lately published, or are in the course of publication, relative to these countries, that are adapted to illustrate". - from the original wrapper. Directions are also given for the placement of these illustrations in Dibdin's work. Bookplate of Robert Frederick Green. Green was the editor, from 1888-1893, of the British Chess Magazine, the oldest chess journal in continuous publication.
