Provenance

This Louis Vuitton trunk was sold in the Jan. 24th, 1997 Sotheby's auction of the Collection of Robert Woolley. It is purported to have been owned by Coco Chanel prior to Robert to Woolley. This claim is supported by the intertwined yellow C's.

Louis Vuitton (since 1854)

In 1854, Louis Vuitton opened his first shop on Rue Neuve-des-Capucines 4. In the times of carriages, steam boats, and trains, Vuitton’s dirt-resistant and waterproof suitecases were in high demand. In 1886, Louis Vuitton’s son, Georges Vuitton (1857-1936), invented a revolutionary ‘tumbler lock’ that is still used. The patented lock protects Louis Vuitton trunk’s with two spring caps. After Louis Vuitton’s death in 1892, Georges took over the company. Later, it was Georges who designed and established the iconic LV monogram. Today, the luxury brand is popular worldwide and remains a leader in fashion.
