Description
MAX KRUSE (Germany, 1869-1938); "Nenikhkamen", a table bronze on marble base, signed on side, titled on front. 14" tall overall. Missing the laurel branch he was holding aloft, marble soiled and chipped. Illustrates the origin story of marathon runners: the 490 BC Invasion of the Persians. Pheidippides, an Athenian Herald, ran 150 miles in two days from Athens to Sparta to ask for help, then after fighting in the Battle of Marathon, ran 40 miles back to Athens to proclaim "Nikomen" (We have won!) and fall dead at the feet of the rulers.
