Painting by Baroness Hyde de Neuville. Label reads: “Oil on canvas by Baroness Anne-Marguerite Henriette Hyde de Neuville. French born Ca 1779, arrived in New York City, 20 June 1807. Died 1849 or 1850 in France. NYHS painting: French Soldiers”. Twleve soldiers are seen outside a stone building. On sight: 5 1/2 x 7 1/2. Overall 11 x 13. * Anne Marguerite Hyde de Neuville was a French aristocrat born in Sancerre, France, she had a birth date of either 1776, 1779 or earlier. She was taught to sketch and married Jean-Guilaume Hyde de Neuville, age 18, an outspoken supporter of the Bourban monarchy. A price on his head, they took refuse for 13 years in the U.S. arriving in 1807. The traveled extensively, and she sketched with watercolors, leaving a valuable historical record of early 19th century American life. In 1814, when Napolean was overthrown, they returned to France and then returned to the U.S. living in Washington D.C. for six years when he was appointed French Minister to the united States.
