Autograph Letter Signed “A. St. Clair”
ARTHUR ST. CLAIR. Revolutionary War General, First Governor of the Northwest Territory.
Autograph Letter Signed, “A. St. Clair” on plain paper, 1 page plus integral address leaf, July 16, 1798, Cincinnati, OH, 8” x 6.5”, Fine. Nice and fresh appearance, some minor fold splits, and paper tears where the seal was opened. A short letter of greeting to Betsy Lawrence “at the Hermitage near Ligonier [PA]” where he also mentions some injuries, in part: “...I continue to mend, and indeed am in very good health, tho’ I have not yet much use of my feet...”. The Northwest Territory at this time was not the area where Oregon and Washington now exit, but where Ohio now exists. St. Clair, when he became Governor of the Territory, moved the capital from Marietta, OH to Losantville, which he renamed Cincinnati in honor of George Washington.
