Museum Quality Colonial Era Staved Wooden “Tankard”
c. Late 18th Century Colonial & Revolutionary War Era, Handmade Staved Wooden Tankard in an Large Rare Size, Choice Very Fine.
This original, late 18th Century Large Wooden Stave Tankard measures near 8.5” high x 6" wide across its top x 7.5" wide at its bottom. It is a lovely, museum quality example of a type seen in various reference books on Colonial period woodenware, see "Early American Antique Country Furnishings" (page 229, Fig 1003) by Nuemann, as well as that author’s book on Revolutionary War era artifacts. It is of all original handmade wooden construction, with a staved design and wrap-around wooden banding. There are two bands, top and bottom securing the edges, complete with its nicely fitting wooden lid. Appears to be all pine construction, typical of New England. Truly an excellent example, having original patina throughout in original condition with just some slight wear. We sold a somewhat larger version in our EAHA Auction of August 27, 2011, Lot 30, graded Choice Very Fine, selling for $1,062. A most impressive Wooden Tankard with a wonderful original patina, and perfect for display.
