Colonial to Revolutionary War Staved Wooden Tankard
c. 1770s Late 18th Century Colonial & Revolutionary War Era, Large Handmade Staved Wooden Tavern Style Tankard, Very Fine.
An original, late 18th Century Wooden Tavern Style Large Tankard. It measures 9" high x 6.25" across its bottom and 5" across its top. Similar to examples seen in various reference books on the American Colonial period for woodenware, also see "Early American Antique Country Furnishings" (page 229, Fig 1003) by Neumann. It is often seen in many author’s books on Revolutionary War era artifacts. This specimen is of all original Handmade wooden construction, with a staved design. Appears to be made of Pine, which is typical of use in New England through the Carolinas. Wooden bands at top and bottom secure the staves in place. A nice clean used example, having original soft original natural patina throughout, some expected slight wear from actual use. It is quite typical of what would have been used in taverns and public houses. Nice in size, thus excellent for display.
