Description
Antique 19th c. Sailor Carved Whales Tooth Madonna / Virgin on old wooden stand. Provenance: Charleston SC Private Collection. Without stand measures 8"x2"x2". With stand 10" tall. Whaling voyages averaged nearly four years. To relieve the boredom of long periods of time between whale sightings, whalemen often played cards, checkers, and wrote in personal journals. Those with artistic talent did carving, sketching, knotwork, and made scrimshaw. The whale hunt provided plenty of material for the scrimshaw and carvers such as teeth and bone. We will not ship this item internationally. Purchasers should familiarize themselves with the appropriate regulations (country) prior to purchasing an item, it is their responsibility. Ref: Flayderman, E. Norman. Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders, Whales and Whalemen. New Milford, Conn.: N. Flayderman & Co., Inc., 1972
