Magnificent Georgian sterling silver meat platter / tray, fully hallmarked for London 1789. This is a superb silver oval meat platter made in the reign of King George III by John Schofield in London 1789. The tray is of classic oval shape with a raised and gadrooned border. The rim of the tray has a coat of arms bearing the motto 'Non Nobis Solum' meaning Not For Ourselves Alone. Clear hallmarks on base. Weighs a heavy 2 pd 11 oz. (39.193 troy ounces) Measures approx 16 x 11. John Schofield was a important and major silversmith working in London at the end of the 18th century. His great-great-grandson Frank M. Schofield founded The Baltimore Silversmiths Manufacturing Company, continuing the family line of fine quality silversmithing. Ref: Rotch Collection (Victoria and Albert Museum).
