These traditional war shields from New Guinea feature bold designs carved, partly in relief. The abstract shapes, some scrolled and some linear and geometrical, are highlighted in vibrant pigments. Tribal shields of this kind were used in open conflicts and their bright decorations were supposed to intimidate enemy warriors.
The shields are in good condition. They show common signs of age and wear such as drying cracks and some losses. The height measures 137, 146 and 210 cm. (tfa)
