A Waghi Valley war shield, Western Highlands, Papua New Guinea.Of classical form, the shield made from a single piece of wood, the surface with two large “X” patterns and painted with orange and white pigment. Remains of older surfaces under the pigmentation. This is a classical shield of the type, usually found around the Mount Hagen area. This old shield appears to have been repainted with natural pigments shortly before it was collected. A fine example.Acquired by Marc Seidler in the Highlands.
