Collection of finely embellished lime containers – essential equipment used in betel chewing
Lime was produced by burning shells or coral and purifying the residue. Then it was stored in bamboo containers such as these. Powdered lime was traditionally used when chewing betel, a mild natural stimulant. This was a common practice in much of Papua New Guinea and the utensils were often elaborately carved and decorated.
The containers are overall in good condition with signs of wear consistent with age and use. There are some age cracks. The height ranges from 36.5 to 45.5 cm. (tfa)
