Milton H. Greene is best remembered for his friendship and business relationship with Marilyn Monroe. During the ten years that they worked and lived together, he photographed Monroe in countless sessions, for example the famous ‘black sitting’. In 1954, a photograph of Marilyn dressed in a tutu was chosen by Time Life as one of three of the most popular images of the 20th century.
The photograph is verso stamped with ‘Authentic Original Photograph by Milton Greene’ . On the back of the frame are various labels. The photograph is mounted with photo corners on a mat. Both lower corners are kinked. The photograph is besides that in good condition. The depiction measures 34.2 x 27 cm, the sheet is 35.5 x 28 cm in size and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 25.2 x 42.2 cm.
Milton H. Greene (1922-1985)
Milton H. Greene began taking photographs at the age of 14. He apprenticed with the photojournalist Elliot Elisofen and assisted Louise Dahl-Wolfe. He received first recognition and was known as the ‘color photography wonder boy’ at the age of 23. In the 1940s and 1950s, he was mainly working as a fashion photographer. In the 1950s and 1960s, he created increasingly portraits of famous personalities. A ten year partnership with Marilyn Monroe followed with the production company Marilyn Monroe Productions to control the actress’s work. Greene created about 53 series of Marilyn in total. (tm)
