Bob Gomel made his most memorable images in the 1960s, when he was active for the LIFE MAGAZINE; the magazine sold 8,000,000 copies a week
The present print depicts a group portrait of the Beatles taken in America in 1964. Gomel presents the stars in a private situation during a sunbath on deckchairs. As impressively seen here, Gomel always intended to ‘penetrate the veneer’, in order to reveal the true personality or character of his sitters.
The silver gelatin print shows the copyright stamp ‘CREDIT TO READ: Bob Gomel LIFE MAGAZINE © Time Inc.’ on the verso. There are further stamps and handwritten notes such as ‘Beatles US tour 1964‘. The print is in good condition considering its age; the upper right corner has been torn and is supported with adhesive tape from the verso. The image size is 16.5 x 24.3 cm and the size of the sheet is 20.5 x 25.5 cm.
Bob Gomel (b. 1933)
The photojournalist Bob Gomel grew up in New York and served in the Navy as a young man. In 1959, he began working for the LIFE MAGAZINE. In the 1970s, he became also active for other major magazines and branched out into advertising photography. In 1977, he relocated his studio in Houston. (cbo)
