This photograph is part of a series that Fritz Pitz created in 1967 of Joseph Beuys. ‘The art of portraying lies in having the empathy to find the right moment of such an encounter, as I want to call such a portrait session – where the portrayed can be relaxed, communicates and the contact between him and the photographer has found a climax.’ (Fritz Pitz, Künstlerportraits, Köln, 1991, S. 34)
The photograph is verso titled, dated and inscribed in pencil ‘BEUYS LECTURE / 04 Take’. The photograph is besides of minimal handling creases in very good condition. The depiction measures 31.5 x 20.2 cm and the dimensions of the sheet are 40.2 x 30.2 cm.
Fritz Pitz (1923-2006)
Fritz Pitz began his artistic education with apprenticing in the parental photo studio. Afterwards, he studied photography and painting in Weimar. Soon, he established his reputation as a portrait photographer. His photographs were shown in international exhibitions since 1955. In 1963, he made his breakthrough with the commission to portray the artists of the Galerie de France in Paris. He was one of the first photographers in 1970 to exhibit at the Louvre. He became famous for portraits of well-known public characters as Salvador Dalí, Joseph Beuys, Henry Moore, David Hockney or Willy Brandt. He was a member of the Club of International Photographers, the Royal Photographic Society and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie.
