A rare Mughal pilgrim flask with elaborated shape and decoration
The Mughal pilgrim flask was crafted of brass in Northern India in the 18th/19th century. The corpus is crafted in the shape of two Hamsas (mythological goose). The spout is in the shape of a fish head. The shoulder is adorned with growing cypress frieze and equipped with suspension eyes. The shape of these bottles was developed to carry water and wine on journeys into battle and the shape was presumably derived from the leather containers that often appear in Mughal and Persian painting.
The pilgrim flask is in very good condition with minimal traces of age and wear. The dimensions are circa 30.5 x 31 x 16 cm (height x width x depth). (tm)
