Provenance: Bucholz Gallery, Madrid; Pan-American Art Gallery, Dallas, TX; Private Collection, Dallas, TX. Exhibited: Bucholz Gallery, Madrid April-May 1953. Note: "La Familia" was originally created as a triptych and was shown at the Bucholz Gallery in 1953, but was later sold at three separate pieces. The center panel is from the original 1953 triptych. The two outer panels were painted in 2001 by Agustin Fernandez on commission, to complete the triptych as it was originally meant to be shown. In personal correspondence between the current owner and the artist dated 12/13/95, the artist states, "The painting La Famila is an important painting of my early work, and the largest I painted in my figurative period 1949-1954. It was painted in Spain, and shown in Madrid in 1953 at the Bucholz Gallery." He goes on to describe the inspiration for and the themes in the work, "La Familia in theme and subject it is a Spanish painting. You will find in it many Spanish symbols; like the fringe of Madronos- the Spanish little round cotton decorations hangers used in dresses and hats-, Also you can see the delineation in the background of the head of a bull. The women in the painting are wearing ballerina shoes as well as the full skirts used in Spain during the Goya period. La Famila was influenced by my many visits to the Prado Museum and specially by the Goya etchings and figures of Majas." We would like to thank the Agustin Fernandez Foundation for confirming the authenticity of this work. Agustin Fernandez (Cuban 1928-2006).
