Description
China, Ming Dynasty, 17th century. Finely carved sculpture representing a "dragon turtle". According to a legend from the Ming Dynasty, the dragon had nine sons, one of which was a tortoise. Each offspring was known for its special qualities and skills. The tortoise was highly regarded for its powerful physique, its ability to carry heavy loads, as well as its longevity. In ancient China, there are examples of grand stele that rest upon the backs of monumental tortoises carved from stone. This example is clearly smaller in scale; and was created as pure ornament. However, it speaks to the ancient legend of the dragon's progeny. Note its hybrid representation with its dragon head and turtle body. Finely carved with remarkably intricate patterns and details! 11-1/2"L x 8-1/4"H x 7-1/4"W
