Description
Printmaker: Lukta Qiatsuq (1928-2004) m., Cape Dorset, Loading Fur Bales, 1966 #34, stonecut and stencil, 26/50, 25 x 34 in, 63.5 x 86.4 cm. ... The oldest and one of Cape Dorset’s greatest sculptors and graphic artists, Kiakshuk concentrated on depicting traditional Inuit life and spirituality in his drawings. This image is somewhat different; it depicts Inuit trappers loading bales of furs onto sleds for transport to a trading post. On the other hand, fur trapping and trading was an integral part of the South Baffin Inuit economy and lifestyle for much of the first half of the 20th century – the time period that comprised the prime of Kiakshuk’s life as an Inuit hunter.--- CATEGORIES: Inuit, Eskimo
