Description
Printmaker: Lukta Qiatsuq (1928-2004) m., Cape Dorset, Spirit with Symbols, 1961 #49, stonecut, 35/50, 23.75 x 18 in, 60.3 x 45.8 cm. Provenance: an American private collection. ... In the 1990 exhibition catalogue Pudlo: Thirty Years of Drawing (NGC 1990), curator Marie Routledge retitled the original graphite drawing for this print Woman with Utensils, based on Pudlo’s later explanation of the image. That description probably goes too far in the other direction; first, Pudlo’s use of symbols was a constant in his career and second, his frequent use of humour and visual puns renders prosaic descriptions strangely inadequate. This image is reproduced in James Houston’s Eskimo Prints (Longman 1971) p. 70, and in National Museum of Man catalogue The Inuit Print (NMM 1977) p. 74.--- CATEGORIES: Inuit, Eskimo
