Puvirnituq, Woman Who Killed a Polar Bear with, a Mitten, 1978, grey-black stone, signed "KOMA" and in syllabics, 2.5 x 3.75 x 1.5 in, 6.2 x 9.7 x 4 cm. ... Illustrated in Harold Seidelman and James Turner, The Inuit Imagination: Arctic Myth and Sculpture, 1993, fig. 79. Exhibited in the Inuit Imagination travelling exhibition (WAG, 1993-94). ... An old woman was taking an evening stroll with her walking stick when she was attacked by a large male bear. After fending the bear off with her stick for a while, she turned her mittens inside out, stuck them on the end of the stick, and rammed the stick down the bear’s throat. The bear choked to death on the mittens.
