Description
Probably Kugaaruk (Pelly Bay), Mother and Child, probably 1950s, beige stone, 4.25 x 2 x 1.25 in, 11 x 5.2 x 3 cm. ... This is the first of a group of beautiful and rare works whose artist(s) have yet to be determined. They are all carved in the same unusual type of stone. Stylistically and thematically they suggest Kugaaruk (Pelly Bay) as a community. The other works in this group are Lots 111, 119, 255 and 256. This lovely depiction of a mother and child might well be a religious subject, namely a Madonna and Child. Kugaaruk in particular had strong influence and encouragement from Catholic missionaries. The woman’s braids are especially beautiful.--- CATEGORIES: Inuit, Eskimo
