Cartier
The exclusive French jeweler and watch company Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 and gained international renown in 1904 with the ‘Santos de Cartier’, a wristwatch created for the famous Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos Dumont. A further milestone in the history of modern watchmaking was the introduction of the Tank watch in 1917, which was inspired by British First World War tanks. With their Paris boutique established in the Rue de la Paix, Cartier soon opened further branches in London, New York and St. Petersburg to cater to the demand of a growing international clientele. Cultivating ties to important members of the aristocracy, Cartier became the supplier to the most notable royal dynasties of the 20th century. Since the beginning, the Maison created innovative pieces of jewelry, inspired by the flora and fauna, often characterized by innovative shapes and extravagant color combination as seen in their ‘Tutti Frutti’ signature style. In addition to exquisite floral motifs Cartier has conceived a fanciful menagerie including exotic birds caught in full flight, sacred creatures from ancient Egypt, wondrous chimeras and fierce felines. The typical Panthère motif was first introduced in 1914 with a women's watch, in 1935 with a ring for the Duchess of Windsor and was later transformed into the famous jewelry series ‘Panthère de Cartier’. The theme was significantly developed by Jeanne Toussaint, nicknamed ‘La Panthère’, who was the creative director of Fine Jewelry from 1933 and as a metaphor of femininity the panther remains an icon of the House of Cartier. In addition to jewelry and watches, Cartier offers a wide range of various leather goods, perfumes, pens, lighters, sunglasses and all sorts of accessories. To this day creations by Cartier are must-haves in the international luxury segment.
