Ilias Lalaounis (1920-2013)
Ilias Lalaounis was born in 1920 in Athens, in the fourth generation of a family of goldsmiths and watchmakers from Delphi. After studiying economics and law at the Univerity of Athens he decided to join his uncle’s jewelry firm where, apprenticed as a goldsmith, he learned the skills that were to determine his future as a master craftsman. In 1941 he took over the family firm. Through the study of ancient art history, Lalaounis was influenced by the traditions and techniques of the Mycenaean and Minoan art, which flowed in his goldsmith's work. He was the first goldsmith who was honored by the Institut de France, Academie des Beaux Arts et des Lettres for his inspiring contribution to the creative jewelry scene.
