Description
ORIGINAL EDITION OF A STUDY ON THE POSSIBILITY OF TRANSFORMATION OF A REPUBLIC INTO A MONARCHY

Lentz, Cyriacus. Cyriaci Lentuli Augustus, sive de convertenda in monarchiam republica; iuxta ductum et mentem Taciti. Amsterdam: Ludovico Elzeviro, 1645.

Contemporary vellum. Engraved extra title, woodcut printer's device on printed title, some ornamental woodcut initials. First edition, and apparently the earliest published work, of the controversially polemical German political philosopher, Cyriacus Lentulus (ca 1620-1678). He here examines possible methods for transforming popular government into a monarchy. Relying heavily on Tacitus, he uses the Augustan Golden Age as his model. A professor of political science and archaeology at Herborn, then of Greek and ecclesiastics at Marburg, Lentulus engaged in violent ideological attacks on Descartes and Grotius.
