Wilson-Type Screw-Barrel Microscope, c. 1730
Simple microscope based on design by Hartsoeker, lacquered brass, detachable turned ivory handle, 1½-inch inner-tube containing condenser, 15/8-inch outer tube with steel spiral spring, brass spring clamp slide-holder and lens, adjustment by screwing the barrel up or down, with 5 lenses (no. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6), 6 ivory slides and brass slide-holder, in ray-skin-covered blue velvet-lined fitted wooden case, only 5 ¼ in. wide. A very popular portable microscope in the mid 1700s.
