Description
Harold Newton (American 1934-1994) Oil Painting on Masonite. The painting is depicting a Florida beach scene with a rough surf due to a storm, having birds and bushes along the shore line. Measures - 22" high x 34" wide + 2 1/2" frame. Signed lower left. Harold Newton is probably the most famous group member of the Highwaymen, a Floridian group of itinerant black folk artists painting in and around Melbourne and the Treasure Coast area of Florida from around 1955 until the 1980s. They were landscapists, who used extremely rapid production methods similar to those used in commercial mass made paintings and used to sell their paintings from the trunks of their cars, visiting banks, doctor's and real estate offices and also in parking lots along the highway to tourists coming or leaving. As a result, they became known as the Highwaymen.
