From 1951 to 1960 Salvador Dali created 101 watercolors illustrating Dante Alighieri's literary masterpiece, the Divine Comedy. The work was commissioned by the Italian government for an edition, but this was not realized. The French publisher Les Heures Claires then issued the sheets as wood engravings in a portfolio comprising six volumes in different editions. 3500 wood blocks were needed to reproduce the 101 watercolors adequately in their nuanced coloring. The present sheets are titled ‘27th Singing: Gloria patri’ (Michler/Löpsinger 1132) and ‘31st Singing: Archangel Gabriel’ (Michler/Löpsinger 1136) from ‘Paradise’.

The two unsigned (differing from the catalog raisonné, there mentioned with woodblock signatures) wood engravings in colors are mounted to a wooden frame along the reverse upper sheet edge and partially darkened. The sheets are overall in very good condition. The frames are in good condition with slight signs of wear. The images measure each around 25 x 18.5 cm, the sheets around 33 x 26 cm. The framed dimensions are 63.5 x 56 cm.
