Gestural applied lines cross the image area vertically and diagonally. Their cutting points are concentrated in the lower right of the image area. A strip in transparent light yellow gives the work a subtle color accent. This is a typical work of the Informal whose representative Hans Hartung was
The aquatint at hand is signed lower right in pencil ‘Hartung’ and numbered lower left in pencil ‘40/90’. The sheet margins are with unobtrusive wear, the sheet is in very good condition. It measures 50 x 45.5 cm.
Hans Hartung (1904-1989)
Hans Heinrich Ernst Hartung was born in 1904 in Leipzig. He worked as a painter and graphic artist. As early as a teenager he turned to the non-objective painting. In 1924, he began studying art history and philosophy at the University of Leipzig. After living in Menorca and in Paris, he received the French citizenship in 1946. After the war, Hartung became one of the most important representatives of the informal art. He exhibited several times at the documenta and at the Venice Biennale in 1960. Hartung's works often recall to the Chinese ink painting. (fea)
