Very sumptuously executed and decorative portfolio by the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser; the auction record for a copy of the portfolio is currently set at €27,000

The gorgeous serigraphs of this portfolio ‘Regentag. Look at it on a rainy day’ were elaborately worked out after paintings and in close collaboration with the artist at the Bavarian printing shop Dietz Offizin in Lengmoos. The up to 31, sometimes phosphorescent colors that were used in combination with different toned metal imprints cause an intense, luminous coloring. In individual sheets it is additionally increased by a glass dust coating or shiny lacquer varnish. Hundertwasser once remarked ‘On a rainy day the colors start to shine; why is a dull day - a rainy day - for me the best day.’. Within the total edition of 3000 copies Hundertwasser has signed and numbered 300 copies of each motif, so that each of the 3000 portfolios contains one signed sheet.

The serigraphed wooden coffer containing ten serigraphs in colors is signed in kurrent on the inner surface of the lid with colored chalks ‘Friedensreich’ and numbered ‘851’ /3000. Additionally the first sheet is numbered in India ink ‘86/300’ (relating to the 300 signed sheets within the total edition), signed in kurrent in India ink ‘Hundertwasser Regentag’, assigned with two red inkan stamps and numbered with India ink ‘851’/3000. On the sheets two to ten signature and inkan stamps are metal imprinted and the numbering is stamped. The sheets are overall in good condition with only occasional tiny defects at the edges, minor creases in the corners or tiny foxmarks. The wooden coffer, too, is in good condition with slight signs of wear. The sheets measure from 47.5 x 67.2 cm to around 49.4 x 67.3 cm. The dimensions of the coffer are 54.8 x 72.5 x 4.3 cm.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928 – 2000)

Born Friedrich Stowasser in Vienna, the famous Austrian artist started calling himself Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser in 1949 when he began studying at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna. In the beginning he was strongly influenced by Schiele, later his numerous trips to Italy, France and North Africa had an increasing impact on his artistic development. In 1953 he used the spiral, which became the defining element of his painted work, for the first time. Hundertwasser described his art as ‘vegetative’. He worked in many graphical techniques such as lithography, silkscreen, etching and woodcut. In the 1970s Hundertwasser also turned to architecture. His first architectural models, like those for the Eurovision show ‘Wünsch Dir was’, presented his ideas of roof afforestation, tree tenants and the window right tenant. From the early 1980s Hundertwasser operated as an "architecture doctor". The construction of the residential complex for the City of Vienna (with the architects Krawina and Pelikan) in the Löwengasse was the beginning of his actual work in the field of architecture. In collaboration with Springmann and Pelikan, Hundertwasser completed many projects in Europe and overseas in the following years. In addition Hundertwasser created numerous art objects and designed posters, stamps, flags, coins, books and porcelain objects. He designed the ‘Vindobona’, a passenger ship of the DDSG Blue Danube (1995), and a Boeing 757 for the airline, Condor, Germany (not realized). On February 19, 2000, Friedensreich Hundertwasser died on his return from New Zealand, as one of the best-known and most influential artists in Europe. (fea)
