In 1954, Henri Matisse had an exhibition at Berggruen & Cie in Paris. ‘Matisse Lithographies Rares’ exhibited a selection of his lithographic works from October until November. This lithograph was printed as the poster of the exhibition, which was printed by Mourlot in Paros. The poster depicts the lithograph ‘Arabesque’ (1924) by Matisse with a woman as the central figure, surrounded by floral motifs in the typical style of Matisse.

The sheet is mounted with adhesive stripes at the upper edge under a mat and framed. The lithograph is in very good condition. Only a small piece of paper is missing in the lower left corner, but this part is covered by the mat. Verso are remains of a former mount and the paper is minimally toned. Henri Matisse (1869 – 1954)

While studying law, Henri Matisse worked as an assistant of a lawyer in Saint-Quentin, where he began taking drawing classes. He began painting, when in 1890 he had to stay in bed for one year because of a heavy appendicitis. After his recovery, he decided to enroll in the Académie Julian and École des Arts décoratifs in Paris. In 1895, he was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts. He was close friends with e.g. Camille Pissarro, Gustave Moreau, André Derain and Pablo Picasso, who also influenced his creativity. Later he visited the Académie Rodin and in 1908 the Académie Matisse was founded that he led together with other artists. Together with Pablo Picasso, Matisse belongs to the most important artists of Classic Modernism. Next to André Derain he is regarded a precursor and principal representative of Fauvism. Works of the artist are held by big art museums worldwide. (tm)
