One of only twelve copies of the first printing bound up for America. The original idea for this book came to Dodgson in February 1881 when he noted in his diary, 'I wrote to Macmillan to suggest a new idea, - a Nursery Edition of Alice with pictures printed in colour'. 10000 sets of sheets were printed by Edmund Evans, but Dodgson rejected these for the colours were too bright and gaudy. He asked that they be reprinted. A few copies with yellow endpapers, with no price on the title-page or the advertisements and without 'People's Edition' on the title-page, were sent to America as samples where they were received on October 29 1889. A penciled inscription in a child's hand on the front free endpaper erroneously claims to be from the author. Very rare.
