Item Details

Description

A very rare and handsome George Jones Renaissance style Majolica wine cooler and cover. 1875, 24”h, marks, shape no 342. Of compana shape with a tapering base decorated with vines and grapes, the deeply modeled bearded satyr-head handles topped with acanthus-leaf clusters. The lid with three rams and interlocking horn handle. A painted example of this vase was exhibited at the Vienna Exhibition 1873 and was illustrated in Llwellyn Jewitt’s Ceramic Art of Great Britain 1883. See Karmason Stacke 2002 p.90 top left. For other examples see Majolica Karmason Stacke 2002 p 98.
