Description
Very rare Minton Majolica ‘Norman’ candle snuffers c.1853, the oval stand decorated with vines and branches against a brown fence ground with a French blue centre, the extinguishers modeled as a boy and girl wearing traditional Normandy costume, 6”w, 3 ½”h. Listed as ‘Double Extinguisher stand’ in the Minton pattern book, see ‘The Dictionary of Minton’ Paul Atterbury, page 51. Candle extinguishers, or snuffers, were made at Minton from the 1830’s and then throughout the 19th century in a wide variety of bodies and decorations including china, parian and Majolica. Over the years, most snuffers were separated from the bases never to be reunited. It is wonderful that this ‘Norman’ example has survived with all three pieces intact. A pair with the tray lacking was sold at Sothebys, English Majolica from a Private Collection, lot 114, 1997.
