Description
A JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD KUTANI BOWL, the deep stoneware bowl with hand painted red decoration to interior surface of several bands, the top with florettes and gilt painted stylized clouds, the center band of geometric design having delicate lines and gilt painted outlines and scrolls, centering a split medallion to center, one side with red background beneath gilt painted scrolling foliage surrounding a circle and diamond shaped cartouche with floral sprays, the other with alternating bands beneath a circular reserve depicting a seated scholar, the exterior decorated with four reserves in a band around the body, the main featuring three seated scholars examining a written scroll, flanked by two reserves with alternating textural bands, another with peony surrounded by scrolling petals, raised on circular foot surrounded by flattened radiating leaves. Hairline crack to base. Height: 3 5/8" Diameter: 8"
