Description
Thangka painting on fabric. Tibet, 19th cent.
Most representative appearance of the often portrayed and especially beloved bodhisattva, here called Ekadasha Sahasrabhuja Lokeshvara in this eleven-headed and thousand-armed form. He makes "all-encompassing compassion“ (mahakarunika) visible: cintamani gem in his main hands, from his eleven heads only the main head expresses mildness while a certain fierceness intensifies up to the top. Also the white color transforms over yellow to red and blue. The top head is the Buddha Amitabha. Avalokiteshvara stands on a lotus base on a square tiered pedestal. The bodhisattva is surrounded by clouds and different Buddha forms, each standing and with specific objects. Bottom center is the four-armed Shadakshari form of Lokeshvaravon within a mountain countryside. Good condition. Brocade mounting and nicely framed.
