Stoneware with enamel color. China, late Ming Dynasty, approx. 17th cent.
Shoulder vessel with rich flowing painted decoration all around: Green tendrils, foliage and peony blossoms painted in iron red. Between these are two long-tailed fenghuang, female and male phoenix, in flight. A border with spirals, another with leaf designs in rows around the throat. Like the edge of the lid, the throat is also decoratively framed with silver. The relief design is floral between zig-zag borders. The powerfully arched lid presents as well floral painting, the knob is bud form with blue underglaze. Excellent condition, particularly the overglaze painting.
