Description
Yellow bronze. India, approx. 17th to 18th cent.
A very elaborate and richly detailed bronze with the high god Vishnu on a tiered base ending on a round lotus pedestal. Typical attributes in his four hands (from top left): Wheel, shell and club. One hand in the gesture of granting protection. Vishnu is standing within an arched gate-like halo, on the sides is a repeating wheel motif and a mythical animal mask at the top. The deity is wearing a silk dhoti, necklaces, a karanda mukuta (pot crown) on his head and is accompanied by his wives Lakshmi and Bhumidevi. On front of the base is a small figure in prayer pose. Some gold was possibly mixed in the bronze, as the surface has a very "golden" radiance. Smoke patina, very good condition.
