Description
Two-part bronze with gilding and inlays. North-Thailand to Burmese regions, 19th until approx. 1900
Buddha seated in paryankasana (half-crossed) on a tall and wide multi-stepped base. His left hand lies on his lap, the other is executing the “calling of the earth to witnessâ€, the bhumisparshamudra, proclaiming his victory over Mara, the embodiment of evil. The head’s size is beautifully accentuated and in combination with the ushnisha, as well as the very tall, pointed ketumala (flame), the spiritual axis is clearly set. The facial features are sensitive and show the Ayutthya-influence. Particularly expressive is also the base with large lotus-leaves in the uppermost row. The lotus-leaves are inlaid with green glass. Underneath, the structure is distinctly edged and refers to the mythical mountain Meru. Age-related abrasion of the lacquer gilding, a few imperfections, otherwise entirely preserved.
HEIGHT 42,8 CM
