Description
KISSI PENNY: Rope-like coiled iron rods. Western Africa, presumably as of 1880. This highly unique currency form was probably first used in the late 19th cent. and persisted until around 1935. In Liberia and even in the 1980´s. For two KP one got a bunch of bananas, a slave cost 300 bunches at 20 KP; KP were revered by the people as " money with soul", given as bridal gifts and broken KP as grave offerings. Broken KP were deemed to be worthless, they had lost their soul and could only be repaired in special ceremonies. KATANGA CROSS: Copper Africa, Tribe of Katanga. This today very rare and impressively large KK was a very valuable form of currency. For 14 KK one bought a bride, or a female goat, a slave or a weapon.
